Program helps high schoolers get a jump on college studies

Wilmington Morning Star - Wilmington,NC
by Sam Scott
July 12, 2006

The students are part of the first class of Isaac Bear Early College High School, an experimental collaboration between New Hanover County Schools and the University of North Carolina Wilmington…Bear students are slated to take classes from both organizations and graduate with half their college work completed at no cost to them. It's a chance for a leg up on life that makes some students turn their backs on pep rallies, school sports and other trappings of a traditional high school.

Once again the US Physics Team will be announcing this week the top 24 students in the nation who have qualified, and rumor has it there will be a least 2 from Charter School of Wilmington, and probably Dan Gao again, who lives in Hockessin, but goes to Exeter. Hopefully the News Journal will again give it some coverage, or they may decide that last year's coverage was enough. After all, how much can you talk about Physics?

Meanwhile in basketball, we can look forward to at least 20 stories about Elena Della Donne next year. We will also see at least 5 or 6 stories about how far behind American students are in math and science.

At what point do we finally realize that kids at schools like Charter are competent, are as qualified as the best in the world, but if we simply treated them like the best in the world we might get a little more interest and excitement.

Perhaps in addition to the well deserved scholarship money for low income bright students, we actually put some large scholarship prizes up for grabs for Science Olympiad or math league, or other competitions.

We routinely do it for sports, but not for what will really count.
