Any Comments? Alternative program speeds graduation Jackson Clarion Ledger - Jackson,MS July 2, 2006 "These courses better prepare me for college because the tests cover seven or eight chapters rather than one or two like at a regular high school," Martin said. "By my senior year, I'll be able to enroll in dual-credit courses and most likely knock out half of my (college) freshman courses while finishing my high school courses."…"This is an ideal route for students wanting to supplement their home-school curriculum in areas of the curriculum that parents are not confident teaching," said Stephen Beebe, coordinator of the program. "In time, it will be the No. 1 route for home-school curriculum in Mississippi." http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060702/NEWS/607020352/1001/news Fill out http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/99999999/OPINION/40714007

Any Comments? West Lowndes' gifted program booming The Commercial Dispatch by Garthia Elena Halbert August 12, 2006 Whatever it is, the number of students in the gifted program - Managing the Educational Resources of the Intellectually Talented - at West Lowndes Elementary School doubled from last year to this year, an increase school officials are seeing across the county…“Enrollment (in MERIT) is up all over the county but especially at West Lowndes. We're very proud of that,” said Lowndes County Schools Superintendent Mike Halford. “We're having more referred to be tested. And I strongly believe the ability has always been there…“There's some extremely talented students who were not in gifted classes,” he noted. http://www.cdispatch.com/articles/2006/08/12/local_news/local02.txt Letters to the Editor: Send to voice@cdispatch.com

Any Comments? Building better brains Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal - Tupelo,MS By Ginny Miller November 9, 2006 In nine years as a Challenge instructor, Teresa Dill-Johnson keeps hearing the same question from students new to the program for the intellectually gifted…“The first thing they want to know is ‘how I got in here,’” Dill-Johnson said about their selection into the program. “We don’t talk about them being better or smarter, we talk about their brains being different.” http://www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=230446&pub=1&div=News Letters to the Editor: Send to Opinion@Djournal.com

Any Comments? Just one size teaching doesn't necessarily fit all children Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal - Tupelo,MS by April Cox November 12, 2006 Differentiating the process of learning means the teacher should offer the student choices of work arrangement to reach mastery, especially for gifted students or students with special needs. http://www.djournal.com/pages/story.asp?ID=230535&pub=1&div=News Letters to the Editor: Send to Opinion@Djournal.com
