I'm new to this group. I read Genius Denied and see now that my son is a victim of "leveling" in his 4th grade class. He is in a private bilingual school and is a straight A student with little credit due to his teachers. Our problem, we have recently learned, is that the school principal has instructed it's teachers to give "average" report card results to all students regardless of their performance. So an A student and a C student receive the same report card results. He's not challenged at school. The material is too easy. When we asked the teachers for more challenging work, the teachers say that they can't give any kids "advanced material" because they have to keep all the kids at the same level.

Here's our problem and I'm hoping someone in this group can help. It's clear that this environment is not the best for our son and we've decided to look at other schools. We are in the process of applying but his "average" report card does not accurately reflect our child and his true classroom performance nor his love of learning. We asked the teachers to provide us with a list of his test grades to attach along with his report card. The teachers have agreed and the information can be made available immediately. BUT the principal denied our request.

IS there any legal reason why he can refuse to provide us with our kid's test grades? Do we not have a right to all the information in our child's academic file?

Thank you!
